Rescuing Food, Fighting Hunger: Kentucky Harvest App Surpasses 2.1 Million Pounds of Food Rescued

At Kentucky Harvest, our mission is simple: rescue surplus food and get it into the hands of those who need it most. Over the past year, we’ve made incredible strides in our fight against food waste and hunger, thanks to the launch of our Kentucky Harvest App.

According to a recent article by Building Kentucky, our app has played a key role in rescuing 2,108,636 pounds of food from 191 food donor locations, including partners like Papa John’s, Sysco, and Thorntons. That’s enough food to provide meals to nearly 250,000 people across our community!

How the App is Making a Difference

Since launching in November 2023, our app has transformed the way we coordinate food rescues. With over 763 volunteers signed up and 4,884 successful food rescues completed, we are making a real impact every single day.

The Power of Volunteers

Our Food Rescue Heroes are the heart of this initiative. They use the app to:
✅ Set their availability for food rescues
✅ Receive notifications when food is ready for pickup
✅ Follow easy step-by-step instructions to deliver food to local nonprofits

This efficiency has resulted in over $4 million in cost savings for 80+ nonprofit partners, allowing them to focus more resources on serving their communities.

A Win for the Environment

Beyond feeding families, our efforts also reduce landfill waste and lower harmful emissions. In just one year, our food rescues have helped cut 6.7 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions—a huge step toward a more sustainable future. With 58% of methane emissions in landfills coming from wasted food, it’s clear that rescuing food is about more than just meals; it’s about protecting our planet.
