Fighting Food Waste and Hunger in Kentucky: A Growing Movement
At Kentucky Harvest, we see the impact of food waste and hunger every day. While millions of pounds of edible food go to waste, thousands of families across Kentucky struggle with food insecurity. A recent article in The Courier-Journal highlights this growing issue and the efforts being made to combat it.
The Food Waste Problem
Food waste is a national crisis. In the U.S., more than one-third of all food goes uneaten, with much of it ending up in landfills. Meanwhile, countless families face food insecurity, not knowing where their next meal will come from. This imbalance calls for immediate action—and organizations across the country, including here in Kentucky, are stepping up.
Innovative Solutions Across the Region
Several initiatives are leading the way in bridging the gap between surplus food and those in need:
🥕 The Farmlink Project (nationwide) – This nonprofit has rescued over 130 million pounds of surplus food, redistributing it to communities and preventing 350 million pounds of carbon emissions from waste.
🍲 La Soupe (Cincinnati, OH) – Since 2014, this organization has turned discarded food into fresh, nutritious meals, rescuing over 639,000 pounds of food and serving 357,000 meals to people in need.
🌽 New Roots’ Fresh Stop Markets (Kentucky) – Founded in 2009, these cooperative markets connect local farmers with families, ensuring access to fresh produce while reducing food waste.
