In the kitchen of your favorite restaurant, there’s a shelf full of canned tomatoes, crackers, or even fresh vegetables that will never make it to your plate. The manager ordered too much, the chef expected more interest in a particular dish, or someone misread the expiration date. Whatever the reason, food meant for people to eat ends up in landfills, unless we demand a change.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A year after Kentucky Harvest launched a mobile app designed to rescue food from local businesses that would have been thrown out, the nonprofit is celebrating its success.

2.1 million pounds of food rescued: new app drives Louisville to fight hunger and waste

Kentucky Harvest, Louisville’s most established organization committed to food rescue, is proud to celebrate a significant milestone for the Louisville region. Since launching the Kentucky Harvest app in November of 2023, the organization facilitated the rescue of 2,108,636 pounds of food from 191 business locations like Papa John’s, Cysco and Thorntons, feeding 250,000 people.
